Democracy Day

New Zenith

Falgun 7, marks the end of the autocratic Rana rule, which lasted for 104 years, and the establishment of democracy in Nepal on 7th Falgun 2007. This day, known as National Democracy Day, symbolizes the shift from a hereditary Rana system to a people's rule. In 2007, King Tribhuvan supported the democratic revolution, which led to the country's transition to democracy, following a struggle against the oppressive Rana regime.
Although democracy brought hopes for freedom and equality, it has faced setbacks over time, including the 30-year Panchayat system and political instability. Even after the re-establishment of democracy in 2046, issues such as corruption, infighting among political parties, and economic struggles continued.
This year's Democracy Day, however, reflects ongoing challenges, as Nepal's political system is still struggling with instability. The promise of true democracy, prosperity, and freedom for all citizens remains unfulfilled, with many Nepalis facing hardships and looking for a meaningful democratic experience that meets their needs and aspirations. The nation is left questioning whether democracy has truly served its people.
